Svenska Spel has closed Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm with immediate effect, following the Swedish Parliament’s decision to end land-based casino operations by 31 December 2025. The closure follows revised ownership instructions received on 24 April, with all remaining land-based casino operations to gradually close in accordance with the new directive. Approximately 240 employees are affected, and dialogue with trade unions has begun. A career fair will be organised for employees in Stockholm, similar to those held in Malmö and Gothenburg.
Impact of Legislative Change and Company Shift
Casino Cosmopol operated under a state monopoly, and its closure required a formal change іn ownership instructions, which has now been confirmed following union negotiations. Previous closures include Sundsvall іn 2020, and Gothenburg and Malmö іn February 2024. Ola Enquist, Casino Cosmopol CEO, stated that union dialogue about the closure has been initiated tо ensure a smooth process for all. Anna Johnson, Svenska Spel President and CEO, highlighted the long history оf Casino Cosmopol іn offering international experiences tо guests. Alongside the closure, Svenska Spel reported SEK1.88bn іn Q1 2025 revenue, marking a shift іn the company’s operations. The company also announced the appointment оf Lotta Sjöstedt as Chairwoman оf Svenska Spel.
